About Odd Orbit
What it is
Odd Orbit is a free, non-commercial 3D globe that puts public natural-science data on one map for curious people: earthquakes, volcanoes, aurora, weather and forecasts, planes, ships, satellites and the ISS, storms, drought, air quality, the jet stream, the seafloor and more.
There is also a Mystery layer with UFO reports, cryptid folklore and internet legends. Every pin is labeled as a report, folklore or fiction, so curiosity is welcome and nothing is passed off as fact.
Who makes it
Odd Orbit is built and run by one independent developer. Questions, ideas and bug reports: oddorbitcontact@gmail.com.
How it runs
- Free to use, with no ads.
- No cookies and no tracking across sites. We count visits anonymously with cookieless Cloudflare Web Analytics; the details are in the privacy policy.
- Every dataset is credited to its source, with licenses listed on the data sources page.
- Tips through Ko-fi (the “Keep the lights on” button on the website) help cover hosting and data costs.
For scientists and data providers
We credit every source by name and license, and cite papers and dataset DOIs where they exist. Each layer says whether it is live, a forecast or a recording.
If you run an instrument, station or archive and would like to share data, or you spot something we got wrong, we would love to hear from you at oddorbitcontact@gmail.com.
Where the data comes from
NOAA, NASA, USGS, MET Norway, CelesTrak, GEBCO, research archives on Zenodo and many more. See the full list, with licenses and refresh rates, on the data sources page.
